Henk van den Berg studied at the
Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam between 1980-85.
He graduated in the subjects of drawing, painting and graphic arts. During
his studies he attended classes of Cees Sperman, Jaap van den Ende and
Hannes Postma.Henk van den Berg started off as a
figurative painter, but after 3 years he switched to abstract work, as he
became more and more interested in the fundamental means of painting such as
material and visual bases.
In that period he was increasingly captivated by the way
in which the paint is applied to the canvas (texture) and how forms and
shapes are distributed within the focal plane (composition).
Simultaneously his use of form develops towards a more
graphic nature. The choice of subjects and forms is more determined by the
reality of the surroundings.

The works shown on the website
demonstrate how the subjects drawn from reality have a monumental character
and are placed in a frontal position. Forms and
images are reconstructed within the work by means of sections, reflections
and rotation. This way of working developed the need to create 3-dimensional
art.
The element of rhythmic repetition of the image is
forcefully present in the plastic work.
The 3-dimentional works are have a limited size and are
often positioned directly on the floor.
The sculptures are made of stone or of wood and stone
combined with lead and draw the attention with their compactly, structured
form.
In the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional work it
is obvious that Van den Berg is mainly interested in the composition and in
the architecture of the image in relationship with the space available.
He received two prizes - VBKD Generale Bankprijs and a
Grant from the Arie Scheffer Fund in 1999.
