the Watts Towers by Sam Rodia
celebrating life
For the first time in my life I had a chance to actually visit the Watts
Towers. When I lived in Southern California I saw them on the news when the
city of LA was testing their strength in the fifties. The officials wanted
them demolished because they thought the were unsafe. To no surprise to people
like Buckminster Fuller they withstood the test and were allowed to remain
standing. Artists and other protagonists were instrumental in their having
been saved.
Actually the whole project that Sam undertook was not only about building
towers. it is the whole environment that he created - in intricate web of
cement, wire and mesh forming an virtual indestructible construction
resembling a marriage between the Eifel Tower in Paris and Park Güell in
Barcelona by Antonio Gaudi.
